Looks like Samsung Gem would be deployed in retail stores at a competitive price (maybe cheaper), by offering the Advanced Touchscreen Display w/ Anti-Scratch & Anti-Smudge. Samsung wrote "It's the smartphone at a very smart price" but there is no numbers so far.

If look at the Samsung SCH-i100 Gem specifications, 800Mhz processor, Android 2.1 (Eclair), it is not surprising to be sold cheap. Looking at the current trend of smartphones already using 1GHz, even the 1.2 Ghz processor, and even support for 3D. But still interesting and may be a great choice for a smartphone with a friendly price.

UPDATE :
10 Feb 2011 - Samsung Gem available in Altell since February 2010
1 March 2011 - Now also available in U.S. Cellular for only $29.99 after $80 mail-in rebate (with Android 2.2 / Froyo).
